Can EIT POWER PUCK II be used to test gallium lamps in the United States?
Answer: Not recommended and probably not working.
The EIT Power Puck II in the United States cannot be used to accurately test curing lamps with metal halides (containing gallium) as the main component for the following reasons:
1. Different design purposes:
Power Puck II is specifically engineered to measure UV radiation energy from both LED and traditional mercury lamps. Its four-channel (UVA, UVB, UVC, UVV) sensor spectral response curves are optimized for LED-specific peak wavelengths (e.g., 365nm, 385nm, 395nm, 405nm) and mercury lamp spectral lines (e.g., 365nm, 313nm, 254nm, 405nm).
Gallium lamp is essentially a metal halide lamp. Based on the spectral line of mercury lamp, gallium (Ga), iron (Fe) and other metal halides are added to greatly enhance the ultraviolet radiation output in the range of 380nm-450nm, especially in the UVA and UVV bands, with a very strong continuous spectrum.
2 Key problems: Spectral mismatch error:
The sensor of any radiometer (including Power Puck) is not equally sensitive to all wavelengths. They have a "weight" function (i.e., spectral response curve). To accurately measure the energy of a light source, this weighting function must be perfectly matched to the active spectrum you care about (e.g., the specific wavelength required to trigger a light curing reaction).
The Power Puck II weighting function was designed for mercury lamps, not for gallium lamps, which have a unique and powerful continuous spectrum. If the Power Puck II is used to measure a gallium lamp, the sensor will respond to the part of the gallium lamp spectrum that it "can see," but the reading does not truly reflect the actual effective energy available for curing in the gallium lamp. This results in a serious distortion of the measurement, either significantly high or low, and the data is completely unreliable.
